Europe’s leading circular economy service provider recognised for its dedication to achieving a world without waste: Interzero wins 2024 German Sustainability Award

+++ Expert jury calls Interzero a pioneer leading the way to a sustainable circular economy

+++ Comprehensive closed-loop solutions and innovative plastics recycling protect the climate and resources

+++ Award ceremony to be held on 23 November 2023 in Düsseldorf

Berlin/Cologne. In recognition of its comprehensive commitment and pioneering “zero waste solutions”, Europe's leading recycling service provider will receive the 2024 German Sustainability Award in the "Waste Management and Recycling Industry" category.

Dedicated to achieving a world without waste, Interzero and its approximately 2,000 employees lead the way to a sustainable future and a world worth living in, in which raw materials are systematically recycled, waste is avoided as much as possible, and natural resources are conserved.

"We are very proud of this award,” said Dr Axel Schweitzer, Chairman and Owner Interzero. “It encourages us to continue our efforts in driving the circular transformation with great determination and passion. If you can think it, do it: Together with customers and partners, we want to achieve a truly sustainable circular economy to more effectively counteract the overloading of our planet. A very big thank you to our customers, partners and also to our own team."

Interzero achieves clearly measurable environmental effects with its analogue and digital closed-loop solutions and the ecologically and economically efficient recycling of raw materials. Scientists at Fraunhofer UMSICHT have been investigating the concrete effects on the climate and resources for 15 years: According to UMSICHT’s “resources SAVED by recycling” study, by managing about 2.1 million tonnes of recyclables in a closed loop, Interzero saved more than 8.7 million tonnes of primary raw materials and avoided around one million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in 2022 alone. According to the calculations made by the Global Footprint Network (GFN), Earth Overshoot Day in 2023 would have been reached 7 minutes and 16 seconds earlier (globally) or 4 hours and 20 minutes earlier (in Germany) without Interzero’s efforts.

Interzero’s Asian sister company increasingly uses closed-loop models adopted from Germany and Europe to drive resource conservation in Asia as well. Interseroh’s social engagement also focuses on sustainable development, one example being the long-standing partnership with basketball club ALBA BERLIN. As a sponsor and environmental partner, Interzero supports the multiple German champion and cup winner in becoming a top team also in terms of sustainability. And it’s successful, too: ALBA BERLIN was also nominated for the final round of this year’s German Sustainability Award in the Sports Business category.

The 16th German Sustainability Award is handed out jointly by the Federal Environment Ministry, the Association of German Chambers of Commerce and Industry (DIHK) and the WWF to companies who lead the way on sustainable transformation. The award ceremony will be held on 23 November 2023 in Düsseldorf.
