Reusable is king: Interseroh and Burger King® launch joint reusable pilot project

In a six-month pilot project, Interseroh and Burger King® are bringing reusable beverage cups to the twelve Burger King® restaurants in Cologne and Frechen. From 1 March 2022, customers will be able to choose reusable beverage cups as an alternative to disposable packaging when ordering. A deposit system is used for the implementation, with which the reusable cups for hot and cold drinks can be borrowed for one euro and returned to all participating restaurants.

If the up to 60,000 cups that are put into circulation are used intensively, hundreds of thousands of disposable cups can be saved. As Burger King®'s long-standing environmental and waste disposal service provider, Interseroh is thus continuously supporting the goal of avoiding waste by reducing plastic and recycling. The knowledge gained from the pilot project will be used to expand the system throughout Germany and develop further reusable alternatives. The aim is to offer reusable options nationwide by 2023.

With its experience and advice, Interseroh was not only closely involved with Burger Kings® before the introduction of the "Looping" system. During the pilot period, the environmental services provider also took over all the steps involved in keeping the reusable drinks cups in circulation. Once the used cups have been collected, they are cleaned in compliance with all hygiene standards and then delivered to Burger King® for reuse.

"Avoiding waste is an essential part of the sustainable use of resources," says Interseroh CEO Dr Axel Schweitzer. "We are delighted that Burger King® is addressing this important issue and that we can support them with our many years of expertise in closing product loops. The joint project with Burger King® fits in very well with our vision of a world without waste and we hope that the reusable cups will be widely used. After all, the more reusable cups are used, the better they are for the environment."
