Interzero supports the demand for a battery deposit scheme
Reducing the risk of fire in waste disposal plants due to incorrectly disposed batteries
Berlin/Cologne. As Europe's leading recycling service provider, Interzero supports the demands for a battery deposit and stronger producer responsibility. The company therefore participated in a demonstration in Berlin's government quarter today, where this urgent request was emphasized in particular by the Bundesverband der Deutschen Entsorgungs-, Wasser- und Kreislaufwirtschaft (Federal Association of the German Waste Management, Water and Recycling Industry), BDE, and its members.
With 800,000 tonnes, Interzero, with sorting plants at five locations in Germany, maintains the largest sorting capacity for lightweight packaging from the Yellow Bin and the Yellow Bag. Almost daily, there are alarms because batteries have been improperly disposed of, leading to self-ignition during sorting or storage of recyclable materials. "Interzero has also lost an entire facility in Marl in this way. There have been recent fires in Braunschweig and Leipzig. We are forced to make significant additional investments in fire protection. The risk, especially for our colleagues on-site, must be substantially reduced. This can only be achieved through regulations and the highest possible incentives for end customers to dispose correctly of batteries or devices containing them," said Jan Kroker, CEO of Interzero.
